1089
the answer for puzzle #6
The five clues
- A four-digit perfect square with digit sum 18.
- A four-digit multiple of 99.
- The square of a two-digit repdigit (all same digit).
- Take any 3-digit number with first ≠ last, subtract its reverse, add the reverse of the result — you get this.
- Multiply by nine and the digits reverse — becomes its mirror.
Backstory
The classic parlor trick: 1089 = 33² = 3² · 11². For any 3-digit number with distinct first and last digits, reversing, subtracting, then adding the reversal always yields 1089. Bonus: 1089 · 9 = 9801, its own reversal.
