1234321
the answer for puzzle #27
The five clues
- A seven-digit palindrome.
- A seven-digit perfect square.
- The square of a four-digit repunit (all 1s).
- It factors as (11·101)² = 121·10201 since 1111 = 11·101.
- The last repunit whose square is 'straightforward' — 11111² carries a digit and breaks the pattern.
Backstory
Repunit squares follow 1, 121, 12321, 1234321, 123454321, 12345654321… but the pattern breaks at 1111111111² (ten ones), where carries begin to interfere. 1234321 = 1111² and reads the same forwards and backwards.
