Backstory
289 = 17², and the leg-squared in the primitive Pythagorean triple (17, 144, 145): 17² + 144² = 145². Because 17 ≡ 1 (mod 4), Fermat's two-square theorem also gives 289 = 8² + 15², a second representation.
