3141
the answer for puzzle #35
The five clues
- A four-digit multiple of three under 4000.
- Its digit sum is nine, so it is divisible by nine.
- Its digits are the first four of a famous mathematical constant.
- π to four significant figures — take the decimal out and read it as an integer.
- 3.141... with the decimal removed.
Backstory
3141 = 3² · 349 reads as the leading digits of π, and 349 itself is prime — a curious fact that lets you factor 3141 by eye once you notice its digit sum (nine) forces divisibility by nine. Not prime, despite its π-esque appearance.
