169
the answer for puzzle #50
The five clues
- A three-digit odd perfect square.
- The square of a two-digit prime.
- It equals 13².
- Both the number and its digit-reversal (961) are perfect squares.
- The Pythagorean triple 5-12-13 gives 5² + 12² = 169.
Backstory
169 = 13² and its reversal 961 = 31². Only a handful of squares reverse to other squares in base 10: the sequence begins 1, 4, 9, 121, 144, 169, 441, 484, 676, 961 — where 169↔961 and 144↔441 are the notable palindromic-reversal pairs.
